‘Wider-mouthed Frog’

The Wider mouthed frog was entered in both the high jump and long jump competitions.

However we’ll never know its ultimate performance as it didn’t make it past the qualification event, it was probably just too dangerous to be let loose!

The 2001 entry the ‘Wide Mouthed Frog’ won the Bronze medal in the high jump clearing 5.35 metres using just 2 elastic bands.

It did this by using phenomenal elastic bands, and by the frog being very light weight -just 101g.

In 2002 the rules were change to give a minimum weight of 1000g, so a new enlarged version, the ‘Wider mouthed frog’ was built to be 10 times the weight, and of course to reach the same dizzy heights as is predecessor it  needed much more power, an estimated ¼ ton of elastic band tension.

The body was built out of aluminium channel and the legs from carbon fibre tube, and with just 4 of the 12 elastic bands fitted, it cleared 3m indicating a potential jump of over 9m…. if the mechanism was able to withstand the full tension.
